"Update - they contacted me and canceled the invoice. Upgrading from 1 star to 3. Waited for the doctor 1.5 hours with no luck. Nevertheless they have sent me an invoice! Don't give a thing about you or your time."
"I came to this hospital with valid tourist insurance. The hospital accepted the insurance and provided the necessary treatment. Almost a year later, they contacted me claiming that the insurance company hadn’t paid them and are now trying to charge me directly. I find this situation unacceptable and quite unprofessional. Be very careful with any bills from the hospital, check please all documents thoroughly and avoid signing anything unclear. Such practices should not happen in a reputable medical institution. The case has been officially reported to the Portuguese health regulator (ERS, complaint no. REC_98510/2025)."
"What kind of hospital allows smoking at the entrance of the building? Don’t they realize that sick people go on there and the smoke can do more damage than good. I walked by and there were a group of people who were smoking, right at the entrance, and it literally made me puke. This is not a good practice for a hospital and if they can’t see how this is not healthy to patients, I can only imagine how their practice is not he building."
"I visited this hospital using a valid travel insurance policy. They accepted the insurance and proceeded with the treatment without any issue. Almost a year later, I was unexpectedly contacted and informed that the insurer hadn’t paid, and the hospital was now demanding payment from me instead. This is highly disappointing and, in my opinion, unprofessional behaviour. Please double-check every bill and document you receive, and make sure not to sign anything you don’t fully understand. Situations like this should not occur in a reputable healthcare institution. The matter has been formally submitted to the Portuguese health authority (ERS, reference REC_98510/2025)."
"I visited the Ophthalmology Department for a consultation and was asked by a staff member to speak Portuguese after I had explained that I only speak English. The staff member said, “You are in Portugal, so you need to speak Portuguese.” He then proceeded to ask how long I had been living in Portugal, implying that I should already be able to speak Portuguese. This experience was very disappointing and made me feel uncomfortable. I chose a private hospital and paid for a service that was expected to accommodate English-speaking patients. It is my understanding that Hospital da Luz promotes convenience and accessibility for international clients, including English-speaking visitors. Being told what language I should or should not speak by a member of your staff was inappropriate and unprofessional. I hope this matter to be reviewed and that appropriate measures be taken to ensure that all patients, regardless of language, are treated with respect and professionalism."
